This simple garden tablescape mixes vintage finds with dollar store touches for an elegant garden party feel, it’s the perfect fairy tale story. Ugly ogre weds beautiful princess.
Y’all – the dollar store makes me smile. As miscellaneous and sometimes heinous looking items practically leap into my basket I softly whisper, “I have the perfect spot for you” and joyfully tote my band of misfits home.
Sometimes I gather pink flamingos and beach mats other times it’s spooky characters, but this time it was peat moss pots and janky fake grass sheets. I mean, what are you supposed to do with these grass pieces for real?
Once home an odd cast of characters gather around my table in a fabulous fairy tale.
The young hold hands with the old. Everyone’s inner beauty shines.
And a sweet vintage garden emerges with a cozy spot for the greatest loves in my life.
And I sit and smile because this table is just as it should be with a happily ever after ending.
Vintage Garden Tablescape Tips:
- You can watch me put this table together here!
- Use craft paper or brown wrapping paper for a table runner, softly rip it for a beautiful edge. Hint: Dollar store item!
- Collect old hymnals and books with no cover or in bad condition and use the pages as placemats and decorations.
- Shop all the aisles at the dollar store, the peat moss cups and bad grass mats came from the garden section! The little grass spikes pop off with ease for cute planters.
- Raffia cures all kinds of woes. And it’s perfect for filling little pots with fake greenery. Hot gluing it all together is helpful but not required.
- The chalkboard clips came from the dollar store craft section. Sharpen your chalk for easy writing.
- Invest in good napkins, these are from World Market and don’t cost a ton, their neutral color lets them blend into a million situations.
- Pick up odd china dishes for a beautiful table setting and fun addition at the dinner table. Be sure to actually use them and not just hide them away in your cabinets.
- Vintage pottery is everything. Get some.
- Make your own Basil herb pillow, I’ll show you how here!
- Remember that you are awesome!

Good morning! Your table is so cute and would look awesome if you left it staged for the summer. So unique. As for the plastic green sheet stuff it is great to cut it up and used to make greenery for a doll house and is exactly what I’ve been looking for without spending a ton of money. Would you mind telling me which dollar store they are at? Keep up the good work. I love reading your blog and see what you are working on.

HI Barb – I originally bought the greenery to use in my dollhouse so great minds think alike! I got this at the 99 Cent Only store – it is an AWESOME dollar store if you have one in your area, you can look on their website for location! So glad you are here friend

I love your site and ideas. I have to tell you tho, I do not shop the Dollar Store. If I did I would onlybuy items NOT from China. There are so many options for fun purchases at thrift stores , yard and estate sales. We really need to keep productivity and jobs where it benefits workers and companied who are not stealing our technology

I totally get that, unfortunately just about everywhere we shop these days has things made overseas. I do my best to support local and small business, but I can’t always and I love a good dollar store find…as well as a great thrifted find! You could easily do this with thrifted stuff, you are so right!

Hi Kim!
I like your vintage tablescape and how you found so many of the elements you used from a dollar store. I love how you used the hymnal pages for the placemat! I would love for you to share this at Homestyle Gathering!. The link party started today and will be open until 7 PM on Saturday. I hope to see you there!

Hi Kim,
These faux foliage mats are exactly what I’m looking for to complete a project wall in my church but I’ve searched both “dollar” stores we have up here in WI and cannot find anything close to them. I don’t suppose you could share the exact store you found them in? Thank you so much!
