We did a fun little road trip to Blanco, Texas and I’m here to tell you all about it. I’m going to fill you in on things to do in Blanco, but I will also tell you the worst thing about Blanco if you stick with me for a minute.
In case you have no clue where in the world this tiny little Texas town is, it sits smack dab in the middle of the hill country and is an easy drive from all the hill country hot spots like Fredricksburg, Marble Falls, Austin, New Braunfels, San Antonio and Dripping Springs. You can literally day trip your heart out from this hill country hub. Now that you know where you’re heading, let’s talk about the sights.
10 Things to do in Blanco, Texas
- Camp in the Blanco State Park – This is a must. It is simply the best way to enjoy the ridiculous sunrise and sunset over the peaceful Blanco River that runs through town. You guys know, I’m new to camping (this was only our second trip in the RV) but it was absolutely charming in every aspect. Between the sweet camping neighbor that parked my trailer for me (because backing up is hard y’all) and swinging our hearts out on the playground, we felt right at home. The boys ran around and got dirty like all kids should. I mean look at those nasty feet, that is nothing but pure boy joy.
- Fish/Swim/Water Sports – It is a river town after all and there are so many spots to drop a pole in the water, so do it! Hopefully, you have a little better luck than my boys did, but regardless of what you pull out of the water, you are certain to leave your cares behind. You can take a swim, rent a kayak or enjoy the shallow pools available in the Blanco State Park. Water sports are plenty here, so take advantage. It’s perfect for kids of all ages.
- Take a Back Road Drive – Get lost on the backroads and enjoy the scenic country. The views will take your breath and the animals will make you smile. There are tons of game ranches throughout the hill country and many are peppered with exotic game. You’re likely to see a wide variety of species if you just keep your eyes peeled. If you are escaping a city, the charm alone will steal your heart. My boys were literally in wildlife heaven and that makes this mama’s heart happy.
- Eat Well – In the words of my 15-year-old, “I haven’t met a person who wasn’t nice and I haven’t had any bad food.” We ate out several times (even though I was determined to cook in that stinkin’ RV) and each experience was delish. Here’s the rundown for ya. We started our Saturday with Gelato for lunch, because vacation. Orobianco Italian Creamery was a win. We devoured Pizza Rolls at Blanco River Pizza Company. The boys were happy campers, they can always manage to eat an obscene quantity of pizza. We had dinner at Rosebud Cafe and everything about it was perfection. They have a huge chart marking the county rainfall, for a vintage loving decor girl like me this giant sign stole my heart. The restaurant felt old and personal, the best. You should check it out for sure. Last but not least is my personal favorite, the BBQ from Old 300 BBQ. I’m pretty sure everyone in town would tell you the same, the food is incredible and the pitmaster is charming. Makes for a great place. You can even order it online HERE if a trip to Texas isn’t in your near future. My boys ran through the Blue Cream Soda stock and said the ribs were their favorite…just in case you need help ordering. 😘
- Visit During Market Days – Once a month on the town square, Blanco holds Market Days. Local vendors in pop-up tents sell their ware and you can buy anything from clothes to candles to jelly and antiques. You obviously know what I went for! Check out the Blanco calendar HERE. Apparently the June Lavender Festival is a great time, so if you are looking for an excuse to visit – try it!
- Enjoy Live Music – Who knew a little town could pack so much fun!? They are well versed in live music and you can enjoy it most weekends in multiple restaurants and bars. Daytime by the river, evenings with live music…yes please. Music makes everything better, so this surprise town feature really set the hook for me.
- Talk A Walk In The Park – Bindseil Park is located right off the square and if you head there at dusk you might be lucky enough to witness a firefly show that will feel nothing but magical. Then you can send your kids to climb the third largest Live Oak tree in Texas. It’s GINORMOUS! This sweet little park is a nod to the family that founded Blanco generations ago. Nothing better than a small town with a family tree!
- Feed The Ducks – It’s never a bad day to feed the ducks. My kids have loved this type of outing since they were little. I’m just saying…if we are near a pond or river with ducks, the ducks just hit the jackpot. Take a minute and enjoy their funny little personalities and if you’re like my crew…name them. This is one of the most peaceful ways to spend some time enjoying God’s creativity and quiet. Look around and remember that the one who made all the surrounding beauty made YOU too!
- Antique – There are a few thrift stores and antique shops in town, so you know I went hunting. I’m always up for an inspirational stroll through a cram-packed antique store and Cranberry’s Antiques on the square did not disappoint. I didn’t have enough time to visit the other spots, but you should definitely explore if you visit! Simply search thrift store or antique store in Google maps and see what pops up.
- Live Like a Local – Anytime you can blend right in with the local folks, do it. Buy a cowboy hat from Herb’s Hat Shop and embrace your inner Texan. Sport a local establishment t-shirt and plop yourself down on an outside patio, you’ll melt right in and the people are sure to welcome you. It’s such a friendly little town. You might even need to clean up fallen branches on a country drive, you know – be neighborly! The best travel tips and advice ALWAYS come from the locals, so make friends and ask questions, you’ll get the inside scoop and that is priceless.
All this small-town charm sounds inviting and you might be wondering what exactly is the worst thing about Blanco, Texas? I’m here to tell ya…it’s seeing Blanco in your rearview mirror. I promise, if you love small-town Texas like I do, you’ll want to stay forever.

Well you brought some tears to my eyes with this post. I moved to Marble Falls in the ’80’s after my ex and I split ways. Back when it was smaller and didn’t have all the Austin techs yet. Didn’t know a soul, but got a job with at the County Attorney’s office in Burnet. (Moved from Plano and just needed to get away) Anyway, I know Blanco well, and it’s even better now. I miss the Hill Country. It holds my heart. You’ll find even more in that area that will make you want to stay, stay!
Thanks for the memories!
