Find a vintage wooden bowl at a thrift store and give it a quick DIY makeover for gorgeous and easy organization on a dime!
Hi friends, Today I have the easiest makeover for you! It’s easy to find and easy to update! Vintage wooden salad bowls are all over garage sales and thrift shops, typically super cheap. They are pretty outdated to use in the kitchen, but make THE BEST catch all trays with just a little effort. Scattered car keys and lip balm all over the counter are a pet peeve of mine. Everything needs a landing place and then clutter doesn’t look so stressful. Do you agree?
I found this old artichoke? acorn? (what do y’all think it is?) wooden bowl at a thrift store and knew it would be a perfect spot by the garage door for my husband to drop his stuff when he walks in the door and grab it on his way out!
I started by painting it all over with a fresh coat of white paint. Y’all this might be my new favorite paint. I have been busy painting the new house and my husband grabbed this paint for me and I LOVE what he bought. It’s Sherwin Williams but it’s their line at Lowe’s. It’s called HGTV Showcase by Sherwin Williams, it comes in a red label and this white is called pure white. It’s a sweet warm white.
This paint is the first paint I’ve used that is truly a one coat job. This is NOT a sponsored post, but probably should be, lol. I love this stuff!! Once it dries I painted the inside cups with Soft Gold from the Decoart Metallics line.
Easy peasy, now the hubs has a holding spot and I have peace. If it were just always this easy! Now get out there and create something today friend! Would you take a minute and share this idea before you go, you’d be my bestie for sure. 🙂 Also – here is another fun idea for those old wooden bowls you find!

Love this idea & it looks beautiful! Kind of a newb question but, were the steps 1. paint white 2. sand a little for the patina look 3. paint gold? Also, is a clear coat needed or do you think it will hold up to keys and change without?
Kim at Hunt and Host says
OK – So I painted white, then gold, then sanded, but I think your steps are better. The metallic gold doesn’t sand as well as the straight paint. I will probably add a wax coat for protection, but haven’t yet. I feel like that seals it pretty good. I def think a clear coat would help if you anticipate high traffic in the bowl though.

Just saw a wood “bowl” like yours at our goodwill last week, would be great for anybody’s pocket stuff to stash. Will be looking for that paint also as want to paint our mudroom and laundry closet doors.
Did you put white burlap over your lampshade which is on same table your bowl is on? Love the texture and look it gives the shade. Great post.
Happy daze
Kim at Hunt and Host says
thanks – you will love that paint and the lamp shade came like that, but you could easily transform one with burlap. love that idea!!!

I remember this post from last year! It encouraged me to find as many wooden bowls as my closet could handle. I love painting them and giving as gifts with a little something in the bowl – necklace, bracelet, wrapped candy. Thank you for posting again!
