This less mess easy TIE-DYE pillow is a breeze to make with fabric paint!
This is such a fun project to create some home decor in minutes with A LOT less mess than traditional tie-dye. I am serious when I say, this is so quick and easy compared to the traditional method of creating with dye. Big thanks to Testors Fabric Spray Paint for partnering with me on this little project!
I wanted to make some fun patriotic pillows for my summer porch. Red, white and blue screams summer to me and will carry your patio decor until Labor Day. I also love to make basic red decor because it comes in handy for so many holidays – Valentine’s Day, Christmas, 4th of July, Memorial Day and Labor Day. Of course, you could create these tie-dye pillows in any color or combination you want and luckily Testors has multiple colors of fabric spray paint for you to choose from, see them all here!
Here are the details on how to create a quick and easy Tie-dye pillow!
Fabric Spray Paint Tie-Dye Pillow Tutorial
- I have included affiliate links in this tutorial so you can order exactly what I used with ease! Simply click the highlighted/underlined links for details.
- I ordered blank pillow cases for this project. The ones I used are 18′ X18″ and they have a more smooth finish than I was expecting. I was thinking they would be more canvas like, but they turned out to work just great!
- Get your favorite colors of Testors Fabric Spray Paint. I used the Red and Blue. You can get this paint at a variety of stores. Here are some options for you: True Value, Menards, Do It Best, Amazon
- A note about this paint: The Testors Fabric Paint does not need to be heat set! That is an amazing added bonus to this product. You also need to wait about 3 days before washing, but I don’t wash pillows much so this is a non-issue for me and this project. If you want to make clothing, t-shirts or other frequently washed items, I just wanted you to know! And yes, you can wash and re-wash this paint. ALSO – the fabric paint is soft to the touch! When I say soft I mean it is like you can’t even feel it! No crusty hard paint on your pillow.
- You will need rubber bands, a spray bottle with water and a surface you can get dirty. This is a good outdoor project!
- Watch the video for a live example of how to fold your pillows. For the Red pillow I started in the middle and swirled the fabric in a circle until it was like a disc.
- Wrap the disc with rubber bands.
- Next spray your pillow case with water.
- Spray the pillow case with Testors Fabric Spray Paint. You will need to turn the pillow case around and over.
- I sprayed more water on the pillow case after the paint to let it bleed into a nice soft tie-dye. You can try this method without water for a more dramatic, crisp looking tie-dye effect.
- Testors Fabric Spray paint will be dry to touch in about 30 minutes. You can unwrap the rubber bands at that point. It won’t be fully dry for a few hours so be careful. If you want more color or pattern, feel free to re-wrap the pillow case and add more (or a different) color for an added touch. I was going to layer the red and blue but decoded to keep solid colors. I think a double color would be precious.
- For the blue pillow I folded it like an accordion and wrapped rubber bands along the gathered length of pillow and repeated the above method – water, fabric spray paint, repeat as needed, let dry and enjoy.
- That’s it – no messy dye clean up, washing and rewashing, worrying about your laundry getting stained – just spray, dry and go!
Even Big Red approves of this fun outdoor living space made fresh with a little paint! I am anxious to use this fun fabric spray paint on some other projects. It would be perfect for fun t-shirts, shoes, blankets, curtains and more home decor. I’d love to hear how you use yours. Please be sure to save this project for later and share it with a fellow craft enthusiast!
