This little project mixes a few of my favorite loves…a vintage garage sale find, pets and crafts. It all started with a vintage mailbox that need a cute idea for a makeover. Then storage got short and I wanted a good way to harness dog leashes and dog treats. A marriage was born. Of course, if you are pet free this concept will still work for a cute storage solution to whatever needs wrangling in your home.
I scored this fabulous crusty rusty vintage mailbox at a garage sale for three bucks. It was a must scoop item! A few coats of spray paint and it was feeling fresh. I made sure a little rust still peeked through the paint, don’t need to totally ruin the vintage feel.
But it needed a little something something. While I love Americana paraphernalia, I wasn’t feeling the plastic Eagle on front, so I decided to make my own sign attachment using a technique I made up a while back. To point to the new contents of the mailbox I decided a bone would be appropriate so I cut one out of cardboard and went to work. You can catch the step by step details in the blog post or watch me do it on a Facebook live here (if you don’t follow me on Facebook you are missing fun lives like this so be sure to hit like and follow while you are over there to follow along!) Here is an in process snap of the other DIY tin label project I did to give you an idea of what it looks like…I will say that the good old thin cardboard from a cereal box works better than the thick cardboard from a shipping box like I used in this project. The ridges kind of show through the foil and the smooth cereal cardboard looks more like a genuine tin label in my opinion.
After I finished my faux tin WOOF sign I attached it with some glue and the new DIY dog walking station was complete. How easy was that? I hung it in our laundry room, which is right by the door to the garage. The box is filled with treats and Gigi and Oliver’s leashes hang on the newspaper hooks. It took a few days, but now everyone knows where to find the dog supplies. I even use it to store extra bow ties and collar flowers for the dogs. It’s great to have everything in one spot that looks good with our decor! You can see the rest of the laundry room here, I have added lots of vintage storage solutions like this throughout the room to make it useful but still cute. Hope these little ideas help you and your furry friends.

So crazy. I just purchased a metal vintage mailbox at a yard sale. Thanks for the great idea. I do have dogs also. Prissy, Little Bit and Tyler – all three are Rescue furbabies.

LOVE that idea. We have 3 senior rescues that we walk multiple times a day and keeping poop bags and stuff in one of those right outside the door on our porch would be awesome. Now I’m going to have to go on the hunt for one! Thanks for the idea!
