I love decorating for Halloween. Every year I transform different areas of the house into a haunted wonderland and it makes me feel like a kid again! My kids love it and that makes it all worthwhile. When Halloween rolls around I always conjure a new spooky story to tell through decorating.
Because I love to change things up so much it has to be affordable. That’s why the 99 Cent Only Store is hands down my favorite spot to load up on the perfect props for Halloween. You can’t beat the quality and selection they have, especially for the price. Wait until you see the goodies I grabbed! You can check here to see if you have a 99 Cent Only Store near you, trust me you need to know this! My #1 tip for finding the best stuff here is to go frequently. They are always changing inventory and you never know what you will find. My kind of treasure hunting. 😉
This year I wanted a vintage farmhouse feel for our Halloween decor. I imagine an old farmhouse, left abandoned with all the pretty silver and serving pieces still sitting on the table, but now it’s overrun with creepy crawly spiders, wide-eyed owls and magical pumpkins. This storyline sets the stage for my favorite kind of decorating, blending old with new to make a personal, lived in feel.
In my story our farmhouse table was left with a gorgeous arrangement in a silver champagne bucket. That was until a giant spider overturned it and spilled the dried up centerpiece across the table, glittery pumpkins rolling about. Now busy spiders dangle from the dusty chandeliers (that part may be more true than I wish!)…To make the “dead” flower arrangement I didn’t have to look far! I just cut some dead branches out of the yard and spray painted them black! My cabinets provided the vintage bucket that got laid out with the freshly sprayed bouquet spilling out across netting I scored at the 99.
Then I layered on my 99 finds….the giant mischievius spider that spilled the decor
glittery pumpkins with the plastic stems replaced by sticks for a more authentic feel and a gorgeous damask velvet pumpkin (can you even believe this was only $1.99!!??)…
a luxurious velvet candlestick (for .99!) paired with handy canvas treat bags that are perfect for silverware…
bejeweled spiders make manners fun (I like to throw them on paper napkins because that’s real life folks AND you can get them while your 99ing!) Let Halloween come early with a little witches brew of candy treats for dessert (that you can also get while shopping because they have FOOD at the 99!) presented on a crystal (ok really plastic, but we’re using our imaginations here people) spider web cake stand.
I splurged on my favorite find. A silver and black spider mermaid pillow. It was 4.99 which is hardly expensive, lol. I still stayed on budget and my kids think it’s the coolest!
My budget friendly finds were busting out of my bag and my dining room so I went ahead and got dramatic on the mantel with my glittery glamorous 99 owls. Again, dead leaves and limbs to the rescue for tons of height and texture. Can I tell you a faux floral arranging secret? You always need a flower frog of some sort to keep your branches/flowers upright. I stuff my plastic shopping bags down in my vase and use those to hold my arrangements in place. This is only good when no watering is required like here!
On top of old books and nestled in with chippy junk I sprinkled in some more glittery pumpkins because you can never have too many and a fun row of paper ghosts are circling the mantel. Doesn’t it feel like a forbidden forest on some old farm land?
Possibly the best budget-friendly find is the ribbon at the 99. Seriously, you can NOT find these precious ribbons cheaper. I layered multiple ribbons for a large bow and then strung a few boney hands in the center. Perfect for a pop of mischief and color.
Every step of the way I mixed in things I already had in my home. Things that are vintage, with age and patina. I think this really makes your decor blend and I promise, if I didn’t tell you all these Halloween decorations came from shopping the 99, you would never know! That’s the best way to do vintage farmhouse Halloween on a budget, make it look like you splurged when you didn’t! If you love this bargain Halloween inspiration I’d love for you to share it or save it for later! Thanks friends! Now tell me what you’d do with these 99 finds!?
