Another fantastic Antiques Week is in the books. Round Top is the twice a year holy grail for antique and junk hunters like myself. I had the privilege of spending a few days there this year and showing some new ladies the ropes with my Round Top Guided Tour. We had a blast! It’s always fun to come home and share the latest trends that emerge from hunting the fields in Warrenton and stalking the tents in Round Top. Here is a list of some trends that stood out from the show this year and further down you can read more about Antiques week and years past if you are interested!
If you want to visit, but don’t know where to start, consider coming with me! I’d love to guide you to all the best spots for great deals, take you to exactly what your looking for and just spend the day bonding over our mutual love of junk hunting! I will take another group next season, so sign up if you’d like to know when the next trip is!
Top Ten Trends From Antiques Week Fall 2018
-
- Silver – I don’t think silver ever left the building but brass and gold have made a strong comeback in recent years edging it out slightly. Well, it’s fighting back and this year I saw it all over the place! I’m on board with this trend, it looks amazing grouped together and placed in rooms other than the kitchen and dining room!
- Nature – Mother nature is always in style and never disappoints, but cut foliage and crops are everywhere! This is fabulous news because it’s an inexpensive way to heighten your decor and feel guilt free when you grow tired of it…just throw it out and change directions. Cotton still reigns as an elegant texture for multiple decor styles, branches add height and dried flowers fill gaps and add interest to any tabletop setting. Even sea shells and antlers fall into this category and you guys know I love an antler!
- Cubby Pieces – Any furniture large or small with multiple drawers or cubbies is a hot ticket item. Think card catalogs, old feed store sorting bins, Safety deposit boxes, mail sorters and lockers. I saw huge statement pieces and small storage that sits desktop. Fill a few drawers with nature peeking out and you have a style hit on your hands.
- Color Grouping – Grouping items of like color takes decorating to another level. It helps a cram packed space of treasures look not so busy, but cohesive. It makes a statement about you and what you like while showing off a wide assortment of things that may not normally go together.
- Find one, find many – Ah -the power of grouping! This has made the list before and weather it is color grouping as mentioned above or like item grouping this design element is a winner. Collect something? They look great shown off together. Big or small, from electrical insulators and small bottles to stacks of suitcases and trunks. I love this look!
- Laundry Baskets – Industiral pieces are still in full swing, things from factories, old restaurants, commercial kitchens and hotels were scattered around, but vintage laundry baskets peppered the show and they were awesome. Filled with seasonal finds, pillows or decorating items, large and small ones almost went unnoticed, but their impact on a room is special.
- Wood & White – Things were stripped back down to the basics, not just in the popular farmhouse style, but all styles felt a little bit of a reset. Most furniture was in it’s original wood state or painted white, colors were not as common as before and it was really refreshing. Texture and shape got to speak this go round.
- The unusual and unexpected – This is really a Round Top staple more than a trend, but it’s worth noting because after all the years I’ve been the show never fails to produce a new unexpected sight or surprise. Sometimes things are kooky, sometimes spooky but always original sights are waiting to be experienced. And it really is an experience, it’s so much more than just shopping. It’s a day with friends, it’s a day to spark creativity and recharge your battery.
- Amber Glass – One shade of glass always seems to stand out from show to show and the loudest shouting shade this time was amber. This glorious brown shines like candy caramel through sun speckled glass jars big and small. I simply adore it and have always had a soft spot for brown, so I was happy to see this shade emerge as a class favorite. The monotone feel it creates when mixed with the wood and white trend is so lovely.
- Amazing Styling Inspiration – If you want a free lesson in home decor and vignette styling then visit Antiques Week. Walk the booths and fields and I dare you not to be inspired. Take photographs (ask first, most vendors are happy to allow them), take a journal, make notes, bookmark the feelings you get and the moods you adore and take them home with you…even if you don’t buy a thing. These vendors are some of the most gifted decorators and they will chat, share and inspire you if you just take the time to talk to them, soak in their style and then go put their ideas to work!
- BONUS TREND! More to do – I’ve said it before, but the opportunities continue to grow. The Round Top area used to have about three places to eat and no night life. Now there are tons of eating spots, dances, The Gathering (this is me there, such a great Christian evening!), art workshops (like the one taught by Jeanne Oliver) and guest speakers sprinkled around the town all through the event. You can hunt all day and then stay and have an entertaining evening as well. It’s worth making a few days of it if you can get away! Tell me – if you’ve been, what’s your favorite thing to do there? favorite booth/field/vendor…I’d love to hear. If this whole thing is new to you you can read about what your missing below and don’t forget to sign up for information about my Round Top Guided Shopping Tour here, I’ll let you know when dates are available. Happy hunting friend!

Bull Market my fave these days. Field of Warrenton for unique and best deals. Not a “fan” of all the new stuff from market, but always a great time. Of course, our all time favorite is Ed’s party at Leftovers in Brenham. Best host ever!

We are alike in our Round Top taste although I don’t know about the Brenham spot will have to check it out!

Love all your great treasure finds. So exciting to see your love and passion for these wonderful old gems. I love also to go looking for old items and see how I can use them for my home. Also I like to see how I might be able to re-modify them and use them in a different way. My Husband is always saying what do you have this time. I find it exciting to explore antique, thrift, junk and dollar stores. Fell like I’m looking for treasures for my home or make it a unique gift. Happy Hunting.

Hi Kim! How I love your website! You had one photo of a smaller American flag on a front door this summer. In fact, I wrote to you asking for the size of the flag and you promptly replied! Well, now I cannot find that picture!
I found a flag and recall you having it hanging, I think, with a dowel? Can you locate that picture and email it to me? Thank you so much!
Kathy

Hi Kim,
This popped up on me feed and was very excited to read. I have planned this trip for October this year. It is my first time and would love any current info you could share. I have heard it will be very crowded and no where to park! The best affordable junk is in Warrenton? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Pam @ Rustic & Refined NC
