Hey friends! Everyone is asking- what is the perfect indoor Halloween decor idea you have up your sleeve… and my answer is CARDBOARD! I have quite a few Halloween DIY options for you, but today we are making cardboard Ravens! They are amazing additions to your Halloween decor and whether you call them Ravens, Crows, or Grackles, these Halloween birds are fun to make (and budget-friendly to boot)!
There is actually a difference between Crows, Grackles, and Ravens, and the bird I made is a mix of them all LOL – but no worries, this is Halloween decor we are talking about, no need for perfection! This is one of the few times each year that your decor doesn’t really have to make sense, you can let your imagination run wild. Enough chatting, let me get to why you came here- the perfect indoor halloween decor idea!
what you’ll need
- my FREE bird pattern
- cardboard
- scissors
- black, white, purple, and yellow paint
- wire
how to make the perfect indoor halloween decor
- After downloading and printing my free bird pattern, cut it out and trace it onto cardboard!
- Cut out cardboard birds and rip off some of the top layers to expose the corrugation. This is great for adding texture around the wing area!!
- Paint them black. I love a vintage-inspired look, so I was messy with this. Don’t worry about making sure it’s all covered and perfect.
- Take a little purple paint to give it some color… and make it spooky!
- Then, add white paint to rough it up and highlight some features like the wings and beak. This doesn’t have to be perfect AT ALL!
- You can use the end of a paintbrush or carefully make a small yellow circle where the eye would be. All of these birds are facing to the side so only one eye needed! After you have made your yellow circle, add a smaller black circle inside. Again, the end of a paintbrush or a sharpie would work here.
- Lastly, their little feet! I used some wire and just twisted it up to look like talons. Once your feet are made, you can just push the wire up into the corrugation of the cardboard and that ought to hold (but you can definitely hot glue to the back if you wanted).
This DIY crow/raven/grackle is absolutely THE perfect indoor Halloween decor. It’s a bit spooky, it’s fun, and best of all–it doesn’t break the bank. I also think this could serve as a sort of general Fall decor, too. It gives me all the hayride, scarecrow, old farmhouse vibes for sure!
