Having recently moved, I would go so far to say I’m kind of an expert! Well, not really… BUT I did learn a lot and I think it’ll help you out! I wish something like this would’ve existed before I moved, but I can’t go back and change that… I can only make YOUR move easier with this insight! So, here it is… the supplies you’ll need for an easier move!
helpful supplies for moving
- Moving Boxes Kit– I don’t know all the boxes you’re going to need, just like you don’t know what all you’ll need… but this kit will certainly get you started!! Once you get going, you’ll get a better idea on what you’ll need, and you can easily go from there!
- Packing Tape– Same as boxes, this one’s pretty obvious! But in the same vein, you also never know exactly how much you’re going to need! I think this kit is a great place to start, and even comes with a dispenser! You can’t beat it!
- Moving Stickers– Of course, the good old sharpie works too, but these are really helpful when you’re in a hurry! Not only do they already have rooms on the sticker, but other helpful information like “fragile,” “this side up,” or even “open first” for those important boxes you need to dig into right away!
- Or Sharpies– If you don’t go the stickers route, you’re going to need sharpies to write important info on your boxes! Don’t get caught without one!
- Mattress bag– This one is not only helpful for physical reasons, but most importantly protects your mattress! I’ve always wondered how well the moving blankets and wrap REALLY protect my mattress– are they cleaned? Are they covering everything? This mattress bag covers the entire mattress and even zips up to lock out anything unwanted!! Plus, it has handles so movers (or friends and family) will appreciate you for it!
- Bubble Wrap– This one feels obvious. You can certainly try and avoid purchasing this if you have enough blankets and towels to use instead, but it’s nice to have!
- Storage and transport for cups or glasses– Yes, you can certainly use a good old cardboard box for this one, or even take a trip to your local liquor store to see if they have extra… but if you don’t want to do that, or if you’d like to KEEP storage around for these sorts of things, this reusable container fits the bill!
- Plate and kitchenware storage and transport– This set is absolutely AMAZING! You can use it to move your plates and china, but also for storage afterwards if you change your display china out often… or whatever the case is for you! They aren’t that expensive, and they’re TOTALLY worth it!
- Storage Bins- If you’re moving some things that you plan to store in the new place anyway, move them in storage tubs!! Movers have no issue with them, and it’s one less thing to worry about when you get to the new place!!
- Packing paper– Yes, you can use bubble wrap and even old blankets or towels, but this is just a good-to-have item! You can not only use it on certain china and kitchenware, but also pots, ceramic figurines, or even holiday decorations! This stuff is VERSATILE!
- TV Moving Box– Okay, check with your moving company first (if you’re using one– and if you’re not, you’ll want this for yourself), but most movers won’t move a TV unless it’s in a box! So you’ll definitely want to have this on moving day! Plus, you can throw the remote and cable that go along with right in there! No losing them!!
- Clothing Storage Bags- You could get a wardrobe box from your moving company, but they’re usually pretty pricey and only a one-time-use kinda deal! With these storage bags, you can grab a couple and use them for the move, but there’s plenty of uses after so the money isn’t wasted! Use it to store clothes you don’t want collecting dust in your closet, or even on trips and vacations! This one folds up for easier carrying!!!
- Vacuum sealed storage bags– These bad boys are a MUST! You can certainly use them to move out-of-season clothing you won’t need right away… but even better! Use these for your big comforters, pillows, and blankets! It’ll make it so much easier to carry and store while you’re in the process of moving!! Game-changer right here!
if you’re moving on your own…
If you’re moving on your own, there’s a couple EXTRA supplies you may want to grab in addition to the ones I mentioned above! And while we’re at it… kudos to you on going for it yourself. It can certainly save you some money, but it’s a task!!! I’ve listed some things that will hopefully make that day a bit easier on you and the family!
- Moving Dolly– With this dolly having 4 wheels, your life will be a breeze!!! It’s got a larger platform so you can fit more all at once AND it folds up for storage once you’re done using it! I bet it’ll come in handy plenty of times to make it completely worth it!!
- Furniture sliders– To an extent, these can only get you so far… but even if you can get those heavy pieces right to the door, it’s going to be a big help!! Plus, you don’t want to scratch your floors (at the old or the new place)!
- Car Bar– This is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a bar that stretches across the back seat of your car and attaches to the hooks on the side. It’s absolutely perfect for transporting clothes or even hanging bags while you’re moving. And then when you have a trip in the future and need to keep your clothes in tip top shape, you’ll have JUST the thing!
Whether you’re using movers or doing it on your own, moving is a tough task! But with the right supplies and preparation, it can be made that much easier!
I hope you find this “checklist” helpful, and definitely let me know if there’s anything YOU would add to the list!
