When I went to France years ago, I just fell in love with the culture and the people, and to this day, I try to incorporate little reminders of it in my home! I remember, while I was at a market in France, almost like a giant garage sale, they all sat back when lunch time came, cracked open the wine and enjoyed a meal, a full MEAL. They didn’t pack the go-to PB&J’s we all know and love, but real, full-on meals. And they took time to enjoy the food and each other, which is something I could definitely use a little more in my life, I think we all could.
This breakfast table is where my kids and I sit most nights and enjoy our meals. But we miss some nights with all the school events and busy teenagers, and even the nights we are able to sit together, it’s easy to take for granted. My daughter is off to college next year, and I won’t get to sit and eat a meal with her a couple times a week– I sure will miss that. So as the French do, I try to remind myself to sit, enjoy, and take it all in.
One of my love languages is nesting, homemaking, building a home and a space my kids enjoy and love. And there’s no detail too small. Since this table is somewhere we end up often, it’s important to me that I keep it cozy, comfortable, and functional. A place they want to sit and talk and laugh, and never get up from.
To create this sweet tablescape, I threw down a checkered runner, that feels sweet and cozy, and on top is a jute runner– my favorite! I love ANYTHING jute! Around the table, my favorite– silver! Thrifted silver platters that we can easily set our plates on at the end of the day! And to top if off, striped napkins! I love a play on patterns and I personally think the checkered pattern and the stripes work really well together!
And for the talking point– the centerpiece, the beautiful lazy susan, french-inspired of course! It’s really what I built this whole table around!
Again, it’s all in the little details here! And because I didn’t want to cover up this beautiful piece, I kept it simple with some candles, clear bottles, and a little greenery from my yard! You can never go wrong with greenery! It keeps it fresh, and it’s FREE– my favorite!
This table is really pretty simple, but I absolutely love it. It is beautiful but remains functional for my busy family. And in those busy moments, this is a place we can all come together and take some time to enjoy one another, like the French remind us to do.
