Sometimes the garage sale angels shine on you and all the world feels right. Y’all – I’m a sucker for a fun deal. Who’s with me??? I’ve been so excited to share my $10 coffee table with you, I feel like it was such a fab find.
Here’s the deal, sometimes you have to shuck a lot of oysters to find a pearl – garage sales are no different. You guys see all the fun stuff I find and decorate with in my home, but what you don’t see are the dozens of garage sales that have me coming up empty-handed. For every amazing garage sale there are 20 that have ZERO good stuff. Getting the deals takes perseverance and determination! You can find the spectacular things, you just have to get out and go!!!
This particular score is a testament to friendship. It’s good to know people and be known. It’s what we are called to – community!!! If you have a friend and you know them well, you think of them when you see things they like or that remind you of them. It’s fun to know someone so much that you can make their day with a gift or gesture. It’s fun to be known in the same way. My neighbor knows me well and when her family had a massive barn clearing garage sale, she called me to go preview and shop early. WOOHOO!!!
When I pulled up and parked the first thing I layed eyes on was this GIANT wooden crate. I needed it. Ok, need is a strong word, wanted is better. They told me it was an old quilt box and it was $10. TEN DOLLARS. I claimed it as fast as I could spit out the words, “I”LL TAKE IT!”.
I found a few other goodies at this epic garage sale – old shutters, a giant glass jar, cool old hardware and toolboxes, sewing drawers and foldable rulers. It was so fun to dig through. You can watch me share my haul on Facebook here.
My neighbor had to actually load up and bring this giant find home for me. They are that sweet. Honestly, I won the neighbor jackpot. My son helped me unload it and then I went to work giving it a little refresh. Worn wood with a rustic patina has my heart, so I didn’t want to do much to this quilt box. I just wanted to clean it up and bring the wood back to life a bit. I used Pledge Orange Oil and a soft cloth to wipe down the wood. (you can buy it here) The oil woke up the wood and it smelled yummy. Honestly, it took me mere minutes to refresh this stunning piece of furniture. It did have a few splatters of paint that I sanded out (they were pink) and some that I left.
Luckily, the quilt box was on casters so I was able to roll it straight in the house when I was done. My son and his friends helped me swap out the old coffee table with my new to me coffee table. I wasn’t really sure the box would fit, but bought it because it was too gorgeous to pass up! I lucked out and it fit right in my living room – totally meant ot be. It’s larger than my last table, but I LOVE it! The warm wood makes the space feel so cozy and lived in.
It goes to show – if you see something you love for a great deal, but you aren’t quite sure what to do with it or where it will go – grab it anyway! You’ll make it work. I hope you get out there this week and find yourself a steal – I’d love to see it if you do. Happy hunting friend.
