I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but mushrooms are everywhere right now. And I don’t mean outside, but in alllllll the stores I visit- I’m seeing mushroom decor, mushroom wallpaper, you name it. I’m loving it though!! I think mushrooms are whimsical, fun and beautiful, and mixing them into my decor feels like a win. So when I ran across these small wooden mushrooms at the dollar store, I knew I had to snag them up and give them a mini mushroom makeover!! Let me tell you how I did it….
what you need
- mini mushrooms (I found mine at the dollar store, but if you can’t find any, I found some on Amazon- linked HERE)
- paint
- Folkart in Parchment or similar
- DecoArt Americana in Cocoa or similar
- Apple Barrel in Burnt Umber or similar
- Apple Barrel in White or similar
- small paint brush
- cardboard
- hot glue gun
mini mushroom makeover
- I varied the paint colors of all of my mushrooms, so there’s no “right” way to do this. On some, I used the color parchment for the base only, then I mixed the burnt umber and parchment for the base on some- just mix it up.
- After painting the base, paint the underside of the mushroom- you know the part than is accordion-like. I did this mainly with the burnt umber color, just dragging my brush inside out to create the fanned affect.
- Afterwards, I used cocoa, burnt umber and parchment to paint the tops of the mushrooms. Some a mix of the all the colors. Again, there’s no perfect way to do this. Nature isn’t perfect, and that gives you a free pass not to be either.
- After the mushrooms were painted, I went in and added little white dots using an even smaller paintbrush. You could also use the end of a paintbrush to do this, or a paint pen!
- Then, I cut out little pieces of cardboard and hot glued the mushrooms onto them. Depending on how you plan to decorate, you can also attach some fake moss to the base!
This is a super simple DIY from the dollar store and I’m loving these mini mushrooms all over the house!!
Perfect to throw in a plater, too!!
