Can you say BORING? My daughter’s bathroom was super boring to her, but she is a teen so that sounds about right doesn’t it? I’ll fully admit I agreed with her on this one, this girl’s bathroom needed some fresh ideas and decor to bring it to life. Here is how we made her boring bathroom a spectacular black and white haven, perfect for my sweet girl. I hope there are some ideas you can steal here. First, look at how it started…
It all started with the fabric. There is not much I love more in the bathroom idea department than floor to ceiling shower curtain treatments! When you treat the shower area kind of like a window it really adds so much interest to the space, especially when you have tall ceilings like we do in this bathroom. You can see how this idea plays out in a bathroom with standard height ceilings in our boy’s bathroom here. I found this kind of stretchy black and white flower material in the dress making section of the fabric store. I always like to cruise ALL the aisles when looking for decorating fabric NOT JUST the decorating section. I felt like the fabric was perfect for a teen girl and it went with the style of the rest of our house.
My mom made long panels for the shower curtain out of this flower fabric. For the curtain liner she extended a standard curtain liner I got at Walmart. I bought two liners and she used the extra for add on material in this bathroom and the boys.
The shower curtain topper and the window treatment fabric is adorable, but really hard to see in these pictures – sorry this room is hard to photograph! I actually used an lining fabric that has raised polka dots on it that would normally be for traction on the fabric, but I just liked the texture and look of it! Again – shop all the aisles! Go big with your bathroom fabrics for a large impact and build the rest of the room around it.
My favorite part of the room is the window box. You see my daughter, Mae asked for a window box outside of her bedroom. I knew there is no way we would give it the attention it would need so I opted to give her one inside instead! I built a simple frame out of fence boards that I sanded down smooth, you know those can be so rough. If you make one, design it so it doesn’t stick out too far, but be sure it sticks out far enough that you can attach it properly. I dry brushed some white paint on the window box and then sealed the whole thing with a clear matte sealer so that the wood wouldn’t grey over time, I’d like it to stay this warm wood tone.
The cute faux flowers sit on the existing window ledge right inside the window box. No watering needed!!! See what kind of unique treatment you can add to your space to bring your decorating dreams to life!
Above the toilet is a precious little piece of artwork I made, more on that later. Before there was a towel bar there, completely awkward to get to from the shower! Now a new towel bar is right by the shower which makes so much more sense. When you decorate, making things work for your needs and creating original pieces make a space really feel like your own.
Last but NEVER least I added a new light fixture with more personality than the standard builder grade one that came with our house. This light fixture was under $100, you can get it here!!!! Lighting is a GREAT way to change up a small space!
This black and white bathroom is now feeling kind of cozy and slightly glamorous all at the same time. And definitely NOT boring!

Kim this bathroom is amazing. Such a lucky young lady to have this bathroom. The light fixture grabbed me right away. Very clever window box and no watering is the best.
Great job.
