Valentine’s is one of those really fun holidays to decorate for– there’s just no rules and it’s all fun and games! It’s usually a pretty DIY heavy holiday in my house though, since I don’t like to spend tons of money on this sweet Holiday! Don’t get me wrong, I actually do LOVE Valentine’s day, I just don’t fall into the trap of spending hundreds of dollars on it… that’s where my line in the sand is drawn! The time frame for the decor to be out feels pretty short, and I usually change up my style from year-to-year, which makes purchasing new decor each and every year feel pretty unreasonable… hence DIY Valentine’s decor for you tiered tray. Quite honestly, what I’m about to show you can go anywhere really, but I do love me a good tiered tray at ANY holiday, so it only felt right here, too!
what you need
- Wooden block– you can cut this yourself, have a store like Home Depot or Lowe’s cut it (at least I believe they do), or you can even look for something at your local dollar store that is around this size, like a wooden block with designs already on it, or a plastic shelf-sitter (you can always paint over those and make the design your own). You can even find wooden blocks in different shapes and sizes on Amazon, I’ve linked some for you HERE!
- Printables from Salvaged Living Mercantile
- Watercolor pencils
- White paint, or color of your choice.
- Red & pink glitter, or color of your choice.
- Mod Podge
- Sanding block
- Small paintbrush
- Water
- Sponge Brush
how to make diy valentine’s decor for you tiered tray
- Make the printables (from Salvaged Living Mercantile) your own– I used watercolor pencils to fill in some spaces and add the color. I then took a paint brush with water on it and blended it out, to give the watercolor effect I was going for! You, of course, don’t have to use the printables from me, you can decorate the block however you’d like!
- Using a sponge brush, place mod podge on the front of the wooden block. After cutting out your personalized Valentine’s printout from Salvaged Living Mercantile, stick it onto the block. Make sure to cover any areas that aren’t laid down with more mod podge.
- Flip the block and do the same on the other side. This step is important if you plan to use the decor in a space that will allow you to see the front and back, like a tiered tray.
- After both sides have a graphic on them, use the sanding block to remove excess paper.
- Paint all sides of the block– I used white but you can do whatever color you’d like!
- After your paint is dry, mod podge on the sides using the sponge brush, and sprinkle glitter all over. Once again, I used pink and red here, but you can use whatever glitter you’d like! I also put a little mod podge on the front of both sides so I can get some glitter to run over the edges!
And that’s it! DIY Valentine’s decor for you tiered tray… or wherever else you’d like to put it! All done on a budget and all really easy! This is a perfect craft to tag-team with kids or grandkids– fun for them and you!!!
