Creative Chalkboard Makeover

This creative chalkboard makeover is to give you a little fun inspiration. It’s doubtful you will be able to replicate it because I have never seen an item quite like what I picked up at a vintage market…This thrifty find gets made into a creative chalkboard, when in doubt chalkboards always look great! This deer head has the cutest branch antlers!

This piece is the essence of why I love junk hunting. In the famous words of Forrest Gump’s mama, “life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.” It should be the theme verse for junk hunting. This deer photo album thingy just called my name, I love it so much! But what in the world do I do with it, because it is not staying like this!

I decided a chalkboard makeover would do the trick so I ripped out the photo holder and cut a piece of hard board to fit the gap. Next I painted with a Decoart chalk paint in grey because a chalk type paint will stick to almost anything. The deer surround is made of a resin type product and the paint worked beautifully on it. I distressed  it slightly, because I adore all things worn and well loved. This thrifty find gets made into a creative chalkboard, when in doubt chalkboards always look great! The poor little guy was missing his horns so a quick trip through the yard had him fixed up in no time. I debated painting the horns too for a more cohesive look…what do y’all think? should I go back and paint them? I can’t decide! I secured them into the existing holes with some wood adhesive. This thrifty find gets made into a creative chalkboard, when in doubt chalkboards always look great! This deer head has the cutest branch antlers! The hard board got a coat of black paint and I sealed it with a chalkboard finish paint, then put adhesive Velcro on the back so I could easily remove the chalkboard portion from the deer portion. (the gap part was very rough and not suitable to be used directly as a chalkboard) . Next I added a hanger and mounted on the wall he went. This deer head has the cutest branch antlers! When you are shopping grab what speaks to you and then wait until a fun idea pops into your head, try paint or fabric, chalkboard or twine, anything to make it your own! Unique pieces like this make your style all YOURS! Have fun hunting friends!

What a fabulous find! No, leave the branches unadorned, I love the natural next to the painted…. Oh I am so jealous!

what an incredible find!!! I am a Texas girl transplanted to NW Florida. Beautiful area but good garage sales or vintage sales are NON EXISTENT here! 🙁 You did a great job re-purposing it.
I also appreciate your correct use of the word too. Sooooooo many people, in this context, leave off the extra o. I just remember that it means in excess or in addition to so the extra o should go on! Good job on your grammar!!!

thanks, we actually lived in NW Florida for a year about 10 years ago and I remember even then the garage sales were slim pickings! I can’t believe that hasn’t changed!

I, too, love things that ‘speak’ to me. My problem is where to put them!

I’m like you, ???? not sure. I’ve always heard, “when in doubt, don’t “. It’s mighty cute just like it is.

I like the horns natural, but i think just a very light “dusting” of paint on them would also look nice.

Great makeover! I agree with the others who like the twig antlers left natural. And though it’s only Spring, I can hardly wait to see how you might decorate that fun, and really unique, piece during Christmas* Kim!

    * I immediately think of ornaments/bells/stars, etc., hanging from the twig antlers, of course! But I know you’d create an awesome Holiday/Winter piece!
