EEEEK! I am so excited to share this buffet makeover and reveal with you! I am in LOVE!
If you are part of The Salvaged Society, you saw when I found this old buffet for a song. You never know what you will come across while out junkin’ and while I wasn’t even looking for this piece, I knew I had to have it when I saw it! The price confirmed the speeding beat of my heart. I had no idea where it would go or if it would even fit in my car, but I know me and I figure the details out later! Figure them out I did – the buffet fit perfectly in my car and the makeover was a breeze!
You might have seen me answering some painting Q&A questions on Facebook while I painted this piece live, if not you can catch the replay here. The main points I want to share about painting a piece like this are as follows:
Tips on Painting Furniture
- Use stainable wood filler to even out large gashes or chipped veneer. It might take a few layers to get it right, but it works! Build it up then sand it down for a smooth finish.
- Clean your surface good. I use some type of degreasing cleanser – Windex works great for me, Clean Slate is awesome too.
- Use quality brushes for the best finish. Zibra brushes are a personal favorite and they have amazing starter kits to get you off on the right foot.
- Good paint matters. There are TONS of great paints on the market, so don’t be afraid to try new ones! For this particular project I used HGTV Home Showcase by Sherwin Williams. I got it at Lowe’s and the color I used is: Ethereal Mood in Satin finish
- You will almost always need multiple coats. No matter how good the paint is, two coats looks better than one. Give into it!
I had been wanting to change things up in my bedroom for a while now. I have a vision for this room that will have to roll out over time but this buffet ended up being a huge piece of the puzzle. I wanted to add a large table to house plants and pretties and what do you know? The buffet fit perfectly into the spot! It might seem a little odd to have a buffet, typically intended for a dining room type space, in your bedroom, but I say – do you! It works for me. 😍 My bedroom is kinda big and just a bed leaves an awkward space, so this extended nightstand kind of situation solves the problem and let’s me expand on my plant hoarding hobby.
No one has accused me of being a minimalist, and this corner of my room won’t change a thing there. I created a moody, layered, ton of texture situation that has my heart. Now that the bedroom is mine alone, I decided to make it a dreamy space to escape to. For me that kind of space is a garden kind of feel. I will be updating the lighting, walls, bedding and possibly the bed as I move along in this slow paced makeover – stay tuned!!!
When creating a corner like this make sure you have a few important elements.
Tips of Decorating A Moody Table Vignette
- Height variation is a necessity – don’t let things fall flat. Use books or vintage pedestals for additional interest AND height, they are great two for one decor pieces! I got the vintage replica column piece at Round Top a few weeks ago.
- Texture is everything! Don’t let your vignettes fall flat from a texture standpoint. Too many of the same texture and it just won’t feel right, not enough texture and you’re in the same boat. Vary the look and feel by adding dimensional pieces and material variety. Think a mix of wood, glass, terra cotta, paper, pottery, words, metals, paintings, fabric or nature.
- Variety – again not too much but enough. Too much of a good thing can be bad. Too many focal points, too many inspirational sayings, too many signs or like items don’t give the eye enough of a break and variation.
- Something Live – I think a touch of nature (alive or once alive) is always a winner. Real plants are my go to when the space allows, but dried grasses, plants or flowers are a quick second. Think pinecones, acorns, shells, nests, flowers, feathers, grasses, branches, moss or anything else available in your area.
- Mix old and new – This is ALWAYS my favorite part. A sweet balance of old and new, DIY and store bought make a cozy home personal and attainable. We can’t always find or afford antiques, but we can get replicas or DIY them. If you thrift shop, you will find unique pieces to add to the mix, use them in unexpected ways for extra personality. Like the silver casserole dish holder turned book and plant holder (or try this with your silver casserole dishes). Or try a vintage pie plate as a plant pot saucer. DIY artwork (tutorial here) mixes in and looks expensive but cost next to nothing! This mix up is the BEST WAY to stretch your budget and create a home that speaks to your personality.
I know this made over buffet will continually get tweaked and updated – especially as I kill the plants on it, LOL! I love that I have a piece I can add to and mix up as I find new beloved treasures. The fact that it only cost $20 is icing on the sweet cake. You CAN have a beautiful home on a budget friend! Most of all I hope this makeover inspires you to look for the unexpected and try new things in new places in your home! Be a dear and share or save this buffet makeover if you enjoyed it!

It’s gorgeous. And btw, I love how you said “tee teeing”. We grew up saying that. Most people say pee now which is crude to me.

Beautiful but I’m just curious, why didn’t you use chalk paint? Do you find latex works better?
Kim at Salvaged Living says
I love chalk paint too, there are soooo many good paints on the market and I use all kinds, I’ve had great success with this particular paint and it’s just what came to mind for this makeover…no exact reason! Very unscientific answer

Just watched the video. Very informative. Why do you prefer flat finishes?
