Hopefully this summer you will have the chance to get away on some sort of vacation, no matter how big or small. I always like to get vacation souvenirs, but you know they can get pricey, they’re unoriginal and many are useless! It’s fun to buy knick knacks and kitschy t-shirts on your travels, but getting a vacation souvenir idea you will actually use, especially in decor, is like finding a rainbow unicorn.
Over the years things we have accidentally found on vacation have been the souvenirs I now cherish and look for. I’ve come to realize the best keepsakes from weekend getaways and family trips are the items we find along the way, on our outings and often from nature. Of course you must follow laws and regulations and not take things that are meant to stay put, but often great treasures are all around you if you just look!
This goody from our beach vacation to Mexico last summer has to be one of my favorite things EVER! My son has a history of eyeing great nature finds that he knows his mama will adore and this vacation he really hit the jackpot. (you can see another of his found items I LOVE here) While he was snorkeling he found this lacy coral drifting to shore. And he snatched it up for me. I of course asked around and made sure it was safe to keep and luckily – it was! I also got this unique looking wood from the beach, it just spoke to me so I kept it. See this awesome idea I made for Christmas from vacation finds.
How did I get this home you are wondering? I carried it on the plane in a bag, on my lap lashing out frequently at any of my children that even looked like they were about to smoosh my treasure! lol!
When you travel next time, look to nature, or unexpected local memorabilia as a unique souvenir to remember your travels. Then mount it on a beautiful background to create a memory you will proudly display. This DIY art was so simple. Hang this awesome DIY in your home and I promise, every time you see it you will think about your vacation and everyone else will think it is beautiful! Get the full tutorial in this tutorial create card I made for y’all – you can even print it and save it!

This post makes me happy. I’ve been told I bring home trash, because I have sticks ,rocks, dried flowers and several types of coral. To me they are treasured memories!

We are going to Montana in September for my nieces wedding…hopefully. My mom has told me she has a lot of things to send home with me that includes items she found along the Yellowstone River and things her parents also found and my dads parents found on all their travels. She already framed most of them or did unique things with them. I’m the only one getting them because my sisters and brothers aren’t interested.

What a special treasure!!! I can’t wait to see what you get, you’ll have to share!! Enjoy your goodies

Love this idea (and your great find). To my husband’s chagrin, I’m a scavenger, too. As we moved about, he complained (just a little) about carting all the rocks I’d collected, suggesting I find a use for them. We now have them in a pretty container and have our guests sign one when they visit. I’ll be seeing what I may have in my stash that would be good to frame, now.

I have come home with pockets full of acorns and random things…why should we grow up!? Its so fun to scavenge like a kid❤

Pine cones from a neighbor’s yard, rocks smoothed from the creek water, acorns from my parent’s yard, hydrangeas dried on my bushes, material scraps my mother saved from her sewing projects, handmade cards from a sweet friend – and these are all local.
Kim at Salvaged Living says
LOVE all of the above!!!
