4th of July is a favorite holiday of mine, I love to decorate with flags. They are so simple to spread around the house for a festive summer feel. Today I’m sharing a fun little 4th of July craft idea (all summer long craft really!) that is sure to spark some creative ideas. You will need to start by gathering some old silverware from your house, thrift store or garage sale. Mismatched, real silver, cheap stuff, it doesn’t matter, it will all work, serving pieces and unique shapes are a bonus. Nothing says Independence day like flags and watermelon, so let’s paint some cute ones!

Gather some craft acrylic paints in your favorite shades of 4th of July colors, plus pink, brown, black and my favorite Glamour Dust in Ice Crystal. An assortment of soft bristle brushes will be needed, you will want to use a small brush, and one with a very small tip.

Let’s star with the watermelon spoon:

1. I use a paper plate for a palette. On the paper plate place a little pink and red right next to each other so the colors touch. Using a small brush dip it in the middle of the two colors, allowing the brush to load with both colors, but don’t mix them. Don’t be afraid to load your brush with paint and get a nice thick coat. Paint the face of your silverware (I lucked out and found these awesome grapefruit spoons at a thrift store), streaking it with the pink/red mix for a nice color variation for the watermelon center. Dry completely, do a second coat if you feel it needs it.
2. Use the same small brush and paint a fat dark green rind on the base of your watermelon. Dry completely.
3. For seed dip the end of a skinny brush in the black paint. (Practice on your plate first.) Place 3-4 dots on the base of the watermelon pink/red portion. Using a very tiny brush drag the wet black paint to a point to make seeds.
4. Use a lighter green (I used a metallic light green) and make a few zigzags in the dark green rind. Dry completely. Having fun yet? 5. For an extra zip coat the watermelon with glamour dust and a slight sparkle will be left once it dries.

For the flag fork:

1. Paint the tines of the fork with red and white acrylic paint, starting with red at the top. Dry completely.
2. Paint the base of the fork blue. Dry completely.
3. Using the same technique as the watermelon seeds, dip the end of a skinny brush in white paint and place a few dots on the blue portion of your flag. Using a skinny brush draw out five points to make a star. You will want to work quickly before paint sets, or just do one at a time.
4. If you’d like an aged feel to your flag water down some brown paint with a small brush and glaze it over the flag. You might want multiple applications for a darker aged feel, or you can coat with the glamour dust for a sparkle effect. I lightly glazed with brown then added sparkle!

These little silverware projects are intended for decorative use only, not for eating. They are precious stuck into potted plants by your door or just placed around holiday vignettes in your house.
